Voltage drop + wire size

Distance matters. Find the wire size your circuit needs for the load and length of the run.

Calculate voltage drop on a known conductor or solve for a wire size that satisfies ampacity and your selected voltage-drop target.

WHY IT’S USEFUL

Long runs can meet basic ampacity requirements and still deliver poor voltage at the load. Craftmetry makes distance part of the decision and shows when voltage drop—not ampacity—is driving an upsize.

WHAT IT DOES

Useful detail without the spreadsheet.

01

Voltage-drop mode

Enter material, conductor size, phase, voltage, current, and one-way distance to see drop in volts and percent.

02

Wire-size mode

Find the minimum conductor that clears both NEC table ampacity and a 2%, 3%, or 5% drop limit.

03

Real installation inputs

Choose copper or aluminum, single- or three-phase power, system voltage, and insulation temperature column.

USE IT WHEN

The answer needs to travel with the work.

  • ✓Detached buildings, pumps, gates, and other long branch circuits
  • ✓Comparing conductor options before buying wire
  • ✓Explaining why a run needs to be upsized beyond its basic ampacity
